MICRODERM
ABRASION

The skin is made up of two main layers – the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the layer that is exposed to the external environment such as sun, pollution, stress, ageing, fatigue, smoking etc. The epidermis’ outer-most layer is called the stratum corneum, which acts as a barrier between the external environment and the lower layers of the skin. This layer is where all the skin imperfections, like blemishes, age spots, wrinkles and light scars occur.
Microdermabrasion works on the stratum corneum and, using a diamond tip, it removes the stratum corneum (dead tissue). The body then recognises this breakdown as an injury, and proceeds to replace the lost skin cells with new and healthy ones
Microdermabrasion is described as an “instant facelift”. It uses minute crystals which are applied to the skin to buff away the skin’s surface layer. It can be applied to the face, the chest, neck, arms or hands.
This treatment can be used for Sun damaged skin, Skin imperfections and blemishes, Age spots and wrinkles and Light scars.
The face is first cleansed, then the diamond tip is applied to the skin via a handpiece that is gently run across the surface to be treated. The tool also collects the dead skin cells that are removed. It is a completely pain-free process.
In the first hour following treatment, mild redness can sometimes appear. Depending on the individual, these side effects can last anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. As microdermabrasion removes some moisture from the skin, a temporary feeling of tightness or dryness may be felt. This is immediately resolved by applying moisturising agents. With the stratum corneum removed, the healing process brings with it newer skin cells which then results in the smoother look and feel of the skin. Lines, blemishes, sun damage etc are removed by this process.
Occasional side effects can be bruising or discolouration of the skin.
After treatment ensure that skin is cleansed and moisturised twice a day – morning and evening is recommended.
